With all of that left-over drop cloth from our school room chair make-overs {here}, I decided to re-cover our dining room chairs too!
Okay, so I'm a little embarrassed to show you these next pictures. Over the years the material had become stained and "well loved" as you can see.
Before:
Years of meals around the table. Countless crafts made. Home school.
Here's a package of a drop cloth from Home Depot for $9.97. A 6X9 ft. piece covered all of my dining room chairs, two of my school room chairs, and I have a bunch left over to do a few more projects with. Not bad, right?
Our high-tech re-covering process. Borrowed staple gun from neighbor. Fold over the drop cloth and cut the edges. You pros out there would have been mortified. But that's how hubby and I roll.
My hero hard at work. He re-covered each and every one of the six chairs. I love him.
Aaaahhh. Nice and clean. Fresh slate. Durable canvas compared to the non-child-friendly sateen material.
After:
Love the "linen" look paired with black.
How would they look with little ruffly skirts on?
Like this one:
Photo from Decor Pad
Not a stain on it. Yet.
Here they all are together sitting around the table.
Before & After side-by-side.

Your chairs look great! Who would have thought a drop cloth would have worked so well. The black on the chairs just makes everything pop. Thanks for sharing.

Love the new seat! I'd not go with the ruffle. The table seems wrong style of it. I do love the model pic. So I hope you find a good solution!
Happy Monday!!

Hi Marie, Isn't is just amazing how something so simple can make such a dramatic change? The chairs looks great. Maybe you can spray them with a fabric protector to help alleviate future stains. We use a commercial product at the furniture store, but there are other things available to the general public- for example: Scotchguard. Inevitably, somebody always spills something on chairs when we have dinner parties- like wine! ICK

Hope all is well w/you!

Love the linen look with the black too, great job!
Are you going to leave them plain or do a stencil or anything on them?

This is genius! Drop cloths aren't the finest texture fabric but so sturdy and it has a great look. Lovely! -- Jane F.

They look wonderful! I love dropcloths and have used them for drapes, 2 more waiting to be turned into drapes and then possibly onto slipcovers (I just have to get brave enough first!) Your chairs turned out perfect! Theresa

They look great! I think a skirt would be adorable too but they honestly don't need it, they are pretty all on their own. And I'm with you, professional upholsterers would be horrified to see my methods!

They look professionally recovered! Great job! I am a huge fan of drop cloths. Growing up in an 1830's farmhouse, my mother had her mom make unbleached muslin curtains for all the windows. Loved them.
April 29th, 2010 at 4:36 am
That looks great. I did the same thing once with a sofa. Was the cheapest slipcover ever! The best thing was that it was washable.

Your "new" chairs look great,, I too love drop cloth, I've made curtains, bags, keychains and also covered a bench.

These look wonderful! The more casual fabric is great with the black finish--and won't it be nice to have such a durable fabric on the seats? Great job!
April 30th, 2010 at 7:40 am
I love the idea of the ruffled skirts, but until you have time for that, this was a very cheap and easy way to give those chairs a fresh look. Nice work.
April 30th, 2010 at 8:11 am
Those turned out great! I see so many people using drop cloths to cover things. I must get myself some. I'm sure I can find something to cover.

Wonderful re-do! And I, being a homeschool mom, too, totally understand the many uses of chairs at home! Have you sprayed them with that stain resistant spray yet? (I can't remember the name of it right now--I need naptime with Thomas!)
